Secret To Looking Young

I am jealous! So jealous! Have you seen Christie Brinkley, lately? This lady at the age of 54, looks like she is 20-something. Besides the fact that she may have had plastic surgery and is a vegetarian, how is it possible to stay young, as you get older?

I am obsess with trying to look younger these days. I have been fortunate enough to have a youthful face  – genetically but sometimes when I look at a new pictures of me, I immediately think, time is creeping up, quickly! I need to make healthy changes fast!

Did you see the show on Oprah, last season, with ladies who are in their 50’s to 70’s. They had a sharp mind,  looked young and living a great healthy lifestyle. I, like you, want that. I would like to share with you what I learned and what people are doing to stay young without botoxs and plastic surgery.

1. Moisturize, Moisturize and Moisturize. My theory is that dry skin can crack and cause the skin to look not smooth. This uneven look is the lost of elasticity under the skin causing you to age prematurely. It is only my theory and I have yet to find any information that supports this but it sounds logic to me!

2. Protect your skin from the sun. I like to stay indoors  – I think this contributed to the fact that I look younger than I am actually am. I have avoided the sun most of the time. But if you are to go out all the time, you should use sunscreen. Nothing more than SPF 30, Jennifer Aniston once said. After SPF 30, it is only a gimmick.

3. Exercise. I don’t mean intensive exercise. Personally, I do not believe in intensive exercises unless you are training for the marathon or trying to be an Olympic athlete. There is no reason to do intensive exercise even for weight loss, too. Intensive exercises can cause long term damage to your bones. Talk to any retired athlete and they will tell you that they are having issues  and pain (and some need operations to recover). I can guarantee you will not be able to keep up with those exercise in your 80’s anyways. So you might as well start utilizing a long term solution. Exercise to me are those that get your heart rate moving faster. Those that make you sweat a bit more like dancing, walking, riding a bike, wall climbing and including weight/ resistance training. Don’t do the same exercise over and over again. You should do different exercises randomly. It will help to prevent your body from adjusting too comfortably at a particular level.

4. Meditate & Laugh a lot- Learning to calm your nerves and your heart rate in stressful times is the key. Stress can age you. Find solutions to potential problems before they occur and always have a contingency plan just in case things don’t work out as you plan.

5. Smile more and squint and frown less. Plain and simple.

6. Your diet – If you can’t grow it, don’t eat it.  You should be eating less process food and more natural food.

7. Drink lots of water and take less caffeine to stay hydrated. I am not talking about only bottled water. There are tons of water in our fruits, vegetables, and soups that are just as sufficient, and even better.

8. Never stop learning. Read  and learn new things that interest you. The world is revolving: old knowledge is not new!

Take these tips and maybe you will need to bring your id card a lot more!

Noticing bad skin lately?

You tried everything on the market to help keep you face clear and smooth but nothing seems to be working. What if I told you that emotions can play a big part of your skin’s development. An article on Oprah.com , “The emotional connection to beautiful skin” states, stress can cause negative impact to our skin.

It is true that if you don’t take care and put yourself first, it shows. In fact, did you know that eczema is mostly suffered by children who experience a death or severe illness in the family or whose parents’ divorce? And did you know that people with melanoma skin cancer were more likely to have gone through a stressful experience prior to their diagnosis? Stress activates the skin immune cells and cause inflammatory under the skin which breaks out. Any good dermatologist will be able to tell you that your personal life may be the problem to your skin. Many of them are not checking with you on this. Incorrect diagnosis maybe causing you to spend more money then you can spare thus creating more stress and making you to go in cycles.

Plus, in these”tough economic times”, we are living in constant fear, depression and anxiety. We all go through stress, at some point in our lives. Sometimes most of us are experiencing stress longer than others. However, it is how you deal with stress that will be your savior for good skin.

The best way to prevent stress is deep breathing, meditation, yoga, hot sauna, hot bath, exercise, and messages. These are all excellent way to reduce stress. You will never get ride of stress but at least you can get to a place where you are allowing yourself to look your best.

Simple as it is: Neti Pot - A teapot through your nose

Have you heard about the raves about the latest  – Neti Pot ? The first time I saw the Neti Pot in my sister’s hand, and with the big spout off its teapot, I said “Are you going to put that up your nose?”.  Understanding the Neti Pot a lot better now, I can see the potential of having it up your nose.

Neti Pot is the latest trend in personal hygiene and it is used for clearing sinuses and preventing allergies. It has been a great wonder for the natural health care movement because there is no drugs or chemicals involved. Basically the process for using the neti pot is to insert liquid from the tea pot, through your nasal to clear away unnecessary debris.  Neti Pot can look like a small tea pot or irregular shape with a pump, like shown in the picture above.

The liquid placed in the neti pot can be many things but normally, plain water or salt water is used. However, they can be essential oils too. So why do you think that every person should have a neti pot in their house, you may ask? It all goes back to the biology of why the human beings has a nose in the first place.

Our nose, flat and pointy, exist to prevent bad substances from entering into our body because of the hair and mucus membrane lining in our nose. Some health practitioners believe that our nose open doors for most diseases to exist within our body.  When we are constantly surrounded in a polluted environment,  this can cause our nose to work less efficiently because it is overloaded with bad substances. Blowing your nose is not the solution, unfortunately. Snorting up nasal sprays doesn’t seem logic anymore: How does the negative substances, inside the nose, get out?

Neti pot is the solution to clearing away the debris and everyone should have it handy. However, don’t use your neti pot too often. In recent studies conducted last year by the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology,  they indicated that using your neti pot often can cause recurrent infection. What they didn’t research or state, how often is too much.

The truth is that even though neti pot is new to the western world, it is not new in India. For many centuries, neti pot has been part of ayurveda and yoga practices in India. Neti means “nasal cleaning” in Sanskrit. I think  the neti pot is a perfect example of how foreign countries already developed products that we are looking to discover or create to solve our problems in the western society. Sometimes the grass is greener on the other side.

Insuring Your Lovely Mane

How much do you value your hair? If you are someone like me, who is extremely frustrated with her hair not conforming to the 1-hour-each-morning-hair-style-routine, then you probably don’t value your hair that much right now.

Do you think your beautiful hair is worth 1 million dollars? Maybe on the good days, when you receive many compliments on your hair. However, some days my hair feels like it is worth less than 1 cent  – if that ever exist.

Football star with the extraordinary hair, Troy Polamalu, is worth $1 million. He is now a brand ambassador for anti-dandruff shampoo, Head & Shoulders. They love his hair so much that they took an insurance policy on his trademark mane of black ringlets. And he is a guy! Can you imagine what the value of a woman’s hair would be?, or your hair could be? Women are, after all, made to have hair. We have them long, we have them styled short, we have them curly and we have them straight. We also have them when we are old, while men loose their hair naturally. So, if a women should loose her hair then that should mean it is a lot of money, right?!

We women love our hair especially ethnic black women. We love to talk about our hair. Have you seen “Good Hair” the movie with Chris Rock. It tells it all. Many black women have a hard time accepting their natural hair as it is.  They are always looking to add something to their hair to give it a “million dollars” look.

How much do we really appreciate what we have? Can you love your hair so much that you think it is worth a million dollars?  Do you think your hair is the most valued possessions? Probably, but not on those days when you hate your hair and you want to shave it all off.  Every time, I watch The Next Top Model (all UK, America or Australia version – sad, I know), every season you can find a model-to-be, who is crying during the model makeover episode because she is the chosen one to have her long hair cut short like a boy. Women take their hair so personally. Men would never act the same way. Anyhow, these girls seem to manage to gain their confidence later and can be seen strutting their stuff on the runway on a later show.

Should we, women, be seriously contemplating getting an insurance policy on our hair. We struggle to find a hairdressers that can make our hair worth a million dollars. Should we be taking out a lifetime insurance policy to save us from a bad hairdresser?

Sounds Fishy to you?

The newest trend of pedicure involves fish eating off human dead skin. Yup you read it right. The fish pedicure, also known as the Piranha Pedicure. Garra Rufa, the mini fish sea monsters are dying for dead skin like yours and to help you have the best pedicure, you can only imagine. The cost: on average $20 for 15 minuets and $35 for 30 minuets. Trust me, this is way better than the Piranha 3D thriller movie in the theaters.

To the western world, Piranha Pedicure is new but in Asia, places like Singapore and Japan the trend has been around for the last six to seven years. The idea started 400 years ago in the southern Turkish river basins and apparently, bathers discover that after the fish were nibbling on their skin and when the came out of the water, they notice their skin improved. They no longer experience psoriasis or eczema. In addition, those with hard skin benefited from fish sucking their skin, as well. It was believed that the enzyme from the fish saliva, diathanol, gave the skin the key ingredient for better condition.

So what does it feel like to have a piranha pedicure, “the sensation is of hundreds of tiny bubbles popping against your feet.”

What exactly are the fish doing any ways? The fish are attaching themselves to your skin sucking what is left of dead skin from your feet and moving along to find a new area to suck on. If you do find a piranha pedicure in your area, make sure that they have industrial-grade filters, sterilizers and strong UV light on the tank to make the treatment safe and hygienic. Also, make sure that the clinic are not using Chin Chin, a cheaper fish some spa owners use, they draw blood when they bite but do the same job. The fish spas started a couple of years ago but since 2008 this treatment had been banned in 14 states because of contamination that caused bacterial infections.

The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care in Ontario has banned the procedure here in Ontario too because health hazard under the Health Protection and Promotion Act. Their reason is that the fish can not be disinfected or sterilized without any harm. Salons in Ontario are hoping that they will be able to offer this pedicure soon. Perhaps by serving one group of fish per client and discarding the fish after use but this comes with a high price tag. Plus, PETA might come knocking on their doors. Otherwise, Tami Beauté des Ongles shop in Montreal is available for you to attend today!
